LA.IDEA INSPIRES!

Liberty's Promise

This year we have partnered with Liberty’s Promise on their Civic Engagement for Beginning English Language Learners (CE-BELL) program. This program is a modified version of their Civics and Citizenship after-school program, which is explicitly designed for this steadily growing population of low-level ESOL students. The vision for CE-BELL is to create an environment that inspires our immigrant youth to dream bigger and explore endless opportunities this county offers them. Many of the youth have only recently arrived in the U.S. in the past few months, so they are still learning the language and getting used to the culture here.

As part of the program, we are looking for guest speakers to share topics that they feel will be relevant to high school students such as, your career or your own personal history of your path as an immigrant in the US. Speakers should be prepared to speak for about 30 minutes plus do a brief Q&A session with the students afterward. The groups range in age from about 15-21, and all are high school students and either immigrant or children of immigrant parents.

The following schools are looking for Spanish Speaking Presenters during the months of March, and April.  Programs start after 3:00pm.

  • Theodore Roosevelt High School, NW D.C. (Mondays and Wednesdays)

  • T.C. Williams High School, Alexandria VA (Tuesdays and Thursdays)

  • Gaithersburg High School, Gaithersburg, MD (Mondays and Wednesdays)

  • JFK High School, Silver Spring, MD (Tuesdays and Thursdays)
